Physical Features
Large male, pandas may stand to
1.8 metres (6 feet) in length and weigh
more than 100 kg (220 pounds);
females are usually smaller. Their round black
ears and black eye patches
stand out against a white face and neck and their
black limbs, tail, legs,
and shoulders contrast with their white bodies. Pandas can easily
stand on their hind
legs and are common to somersault, roll, and
dust-bathe. Although somewhat
awkward as climbers, pandas climb trees and,
on the basis of the similarities to
bears, they are probably capable of
swimming. A weird characteristic about a
Giant Panda is an enlarged wrist
bone that works just like a thumb, enabling
pandas to handle
food.
The giant panda is an endangered species. It
is believed that less than
1,000 giant pandas survive in the wild. Massive
efforts are being made to
protect these animals. The Chinese government has
made the areas inhabited by
pandas into nature preserves and about 100
giant pandas are kept in zoos. The
Chinese government had lent Giant Pandas
to other nations as a sign of
friendship.
